The nature and way of life
Gjøra and Sunndal are situated between the mountain massifs of Trollheimen and Dovrefjell. The reindeer in the Snøhetta area were surely one of the main reasons for the first pioneers to settle here. Animal traps and sleeping shelters tell the story about hunting for thousands of years. Salmon traps in the river Driva caught more salmon than people could consume! In the 1850's the first British anglers arrived here. At the end of the 18th century the income out of renting the river to the British lords exceeded the budget of the whole rural district!
    From trapper to shift worker
In spite of Sunndal's westerly situation, the climate in the upper part of the valley is quite dry. The amount of precipitation in Gjøra per year is 733 mm. Mild winds from the south, the southwest and the east plus the sandy soil makes this area suitable for growing grain and potatoes. Management of forestry takes place on rather steep slopes, keeping the sawmills at the farms busy. Most people though, are employed at the region's biggest industrial plant, called Hydro Aluminium Sunndal and other different local public enterprises.
